Servicable budget release of Sousa marches Sep 14, 2011

I purchased this CD when I was in my younger years of CD collecting, back when I knew virtually nothing about major orchestras or conductors, or reputable record labels. I was in my high school band at the time and we were playing some of these marches, so a recording was in order. I was more drawn to this one because the cover looked kind of cool (the background is metallic blue with embossed stars), and it had the well-known Sousa marches, and was at a good price.
But we grow up! Now I sit here listening to this CD for the first time in probably 10 years, and a few observations come to mind. The performances here are by The Parade Brass & Symphony Orchestra, cond. by Bedros Papazian, neither of which I have ever heard of. The performances are good, but I find that the dynamics are not varied nearly enough. The softs could be softer, etc. It is to the extent that the marches as presented here start to sound alike after a few tracks. Overall, a worthy compilation that will suit your needs well if you are on a budget. But if you can, try to find a recording by one of the US or UK Military bands, and Frederick Fennell has also recorded many Sousa marches that are available on various CDs.

I bought this cd because my son is in the band and we all love to play it. The music has very good sound and the pieces are played by this band just great!
highly recommnend this for anyone that enjoys all kind of music. Most pieces are popular to the general public.
